"Each flower is a soul opening up nature" - Corita
Can you believe it's September already? I'm still soaking up all the summer colors and bounty, but I am secretly excited about what fall brings!
September marks the beginning of the fall planting season — the ideal time to get many plants into the ground. The equinox arrives this month but the weather is still warm. While the native flora has gone, California fuchsia is in bloom with its brilliant red flowers.
Most nurseries are well stocked now with trees, shrubs, vines, and groundcovers. Add fall color to your garden with Asters, Chrysanthemums, Gaillardia, Gloriosa Daisy, Japanese Anemone, Lion’s tail, Purple Coneflower, and Salvia. Set out seedlings of Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Lettuce, and Spinach. Plant seeds of Beets, Carrots, Leeks, Onions, Peas, Radishes, and Turnips. An EpicCuriousLife and Marin county favorite is Green Jeans Garden Supply located in Mill Valley -- Xander and Kevin, owners of Green Jeans, are incredibly knowledgeable and can special order plants that may be hard to find as well as provide garden and landscape design.
Cool-season greens like arugula, chard, kale, lettuce, and mustard are some of the easiest vegetables to grow from seed and have much better flavor than store-bought types. Here in Northern California and Marin County, the Petaluma Seed Bank is an amazing source for seeds ranging from regular garden variety all the way through to heirloom and hard-to-find varieties.
